Debrah Kay

New CD In The Works

Debrah Kay has been working on a new CD.  It's been five long years since her last release.  The new CD will feature all new material co-written by Debrah and long-time friend Mike Baker.  "I have been kind of reinventing myself musically,' she said in a recent interview.  "Trying to come up with a fresh new sound.  My sisters were quite a bit older than me so, I grew up listening  to Jim Croce, Carol King, James Taylor.  I've always loved the old style, acoustic, finger-picking of Jim Croce and James Taylor and Carol King is just a big influence on me. So, we've really stripped our songs down musically and come up with a more sparse, simple acoustic country-rock with a little hint of rhythm and blues.  I'm really excited about playing again and doing our new stuff.  The songs included on this CD are probably the best I have ever written," she says.  "It all comes down to incorporating real life experiences into your music.  I think that's what we've done with these new songs.  Some are just raw heart break others are happy, thankful blessings.  And that's what life is."  The once chosen title cut, "Something Beautiful," is a playful tune celebrating love in a new relationship.  "We chose Something Beautiful as the name for the CD and the title cut.  However, now we've cut some other great songs so it's just hard to decide. The CD needs a name I'm just not sure Something Beautiful will be it at this point."  Debrah explores the difficulties of love lost on, "You're Gonna Leave Me Again,"  "Empty," and "Why."  "One of my favorite songs of all time is, Chris Cagle's "Miss Me Baby."  So, Mike and I wrote kind of a sequel to "Miss Me Baby," called, "Every Time I Hear Miss Me Baby."  Debrah says, being on the road performing, she and the guys have seen their share of dumpy motel rooms and she spares no feelings on the subject in the playful, "Motel Hell."  "However, with the new sound we've created, I'm not sure Motel Hell will even make the CD.  I'm not sure it fits with the new sound. It's very country.
She gave us a small sampling of a tune she says is her favorite of all.  "We were heading back home to Nashville from Texas and there's this sign between Little Rock and Memphis that says Memphis 100 miles.  So, I just start singing, "I'll be a hundred miles from Memphis by the time you get this and I ain't looking back no I ain't turning back now."  And Mike gets his guitar and just starts playing what I'm singing. Then he strums this long cord and I sang, "I'll be in Nashville before morning." And he finished it singing, "But, I'll be over you way before then."  The song titled, "No Hard Feelings," was written and finished before they made it back to Nashville that evening.  "That's the funny thing about songwriting, sometimes a song takes ten minutes to write and sometimes they take years to finish.  I keep a digital voice recorder in my nightstand because I wake up in the middle of the night sometimes with a song playing in my head and I have to get it down so I don't lose it. "  She laughed.  "I've written some of my best songs in the shower."
Debrah looks forward to finishing the new CD, performing her new material at live shows, and touring.  She's also ready to return to the CMA Music Festival also known as Fan Fair in Nashville in 2012.  'I wanted to do it this year, but the CD's not ready and that's one of the main reasons to go is to  bring the fans  new material.  She plans a big comeback in 2012 complete with new CD's a new live show and a huge Fan Club party as well. "We've taken enough time off,' she concluded.  'Time to get back to work."
